Atellior has been shortlisted at the British Homes Awards 2022

Atellior has been shortlisted at the British Homes Awards 2022 in the category "Best Interior Design: Development" with the project Royal Arsenal Riverside Apartment.

Royal Arsenal Riverside is one of London’s most exciting Thames-side addresses. Occupying a prime location along the river, the 400-unit development is also home to London’s newest Creative District.

The brief was to celebrate British maximalism; Atellior responded by creating a modern reinterpretation of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, which championed craftsmanship and favoured bold forms and strong colours, often based on flora and fauna. Atellior took key design inspiration from Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, who are synonymous with a tongue-in-cheek reinvention of British romantic historicism, a reverence for bespoke craftsmanship and a love of the natural world. Accordingly, Atellior have curated a sensuous multi-layered interior which seamlessly blends textured wallcoverings, luxurious upholstery, elegant bespoke joinery and luxurious finishes, to create a richly coloured vibrant space with a sense of grandeur.

Atellior used local bespoke joinery firms and sourced furniture and fittings from British ISO accredited manufacturers, designers and artisans to help limit the carbon footprint. One of the innovations of the design is the relatively high proportion of bespoke joinery, which brought its own challenges in terms of scale and budget. Additionally, the bathrooms were manufactured pod-style off-site which demanded a meticulous approach to planning to achieve a seamless installation. The finished show apartment responds to both its environment and the client brief by offering the target buyer (a young professional or overseas investor) the perfect opportunity to buy into a piece of quintessential British design; a magnificently eclectic yet incredibly glamorous jewel box of a home.

The design is influenced by London’s docklands, paying homage to the cultural and commercial history of the surrounding area. The palette for the Saffron Wharf apartments is bold yet sophisticated, incorporating playful pops of colour and pattern. Added to this are touches of brushed brass and gold-veined marble which further enhance the design scheme and nod to the spice-trading heritage of Saffron Wharf. The geometric lines of the bespoke joinery reference the architecture found along the east banks of the river Thames. Black marble, brushed brass inlays, and dark veneered details convey Atellior’s bold and creative vision for the apartment. Locality, both historical and contemporary, is the driving catalyst in the creation of a new sense of place.

Atellior wins the BIG SEE Interior Design Award 2022 for the Le Meridien Lav Hotel Project

View article online

The main task in the refurbishment of Le Méridien Lav was to achieve a balance between the Mediterranean ambience and the mid-century spirit of this legendary hotel. Located in the vicinity of Split, it is the largest hotel on this part of Dalmatian Coast. The project scope was to refurbish the reception area, lobby and bar with accompanying terraces. Repositioning the bar opened up the floor plan and maximised guest views of the unique and spectacular setting. In the bar, intimate ambiences were created with carefully positioned partitions and furniture. The reception area was redesigned to create a multi-use lounge space and features an original 3d wall sculpture centrepiece above the reception pods. The artwork is a parametric outline of the nearby coastline. The overall interior design scheme connects the indoor and outdoor areas opening up the lobby to the terraces.

With sustainability being a key consideration, we preserved and reintegrated the existing stone flooring and cladding; used locally sourced materials (wood), as well as collaborated with locally-based artisans. Biophilic design helps replicate the essence of the surrounding Mediterranean flora. Atellior has celebrated the importance of the hotel’s legendary history as a hub of the vibrant Split culture through the curation and display of mid-century photographs documenting everyday life in Split and Dalmatia. As the final result, the public areas were given a modern and airy feel while respecting the building’s heritage and importance as a local landmark.

This project has also been nominated for the Grand Prix award in the category Hospitality.

Innovation in the hotel business is not something we normally see very often. This used to be a traditional, conservative sector, the concept of which had not changed for decades, and hotels were mostly understood as dormitories, while hotel restaurants and bars were often half-empty and gyms were used only by sports fanatics. Fortunately, this state of play was turned upside-down by a new generation of hoteliers and guests who care less about the form and more about the content. They are looking for contact with the local culture and gastronomy, seeking out different activities and new acquaintances, and new technologies in particular have allowed them to combine business and pleasure wherever their job or just for fun take them. This has created a new playground for investors, developers, hotel operators and hotel designers, whose final touch is necessary for an idea to be able to conquer the market.

Perfect example of an innovative hotel product is the SIRO Boka Place, currently in development in the Bay of Kotor within Porto Montenegro, opening in 2023. This project is being developed by Adriatic Marinas in cooperation with the hotel company Kerzner. Kerzner is the founder of such luxury as One&One, Atlantis Resorts and Residences, and Magazan Beach & Golf Resort, and is among the leading innovator in this industry. The design is the responsibility of the international architectural studio Atellior, a team of creative people that offer solutions to the leading global hotel chains all over Europe from their offices in Zagreb and London."

Find out about the advantages of having offices in both the UK and Croatia, the impact of the pandemic in hotel design and the projects Atellior is currently working on in Volume 30, Autumn & Winter 2021/2022 edition.

„This apartment wins the Gold award for many reasons, but the overriding factor is the quality of the fixtures and fittings. According to Clive Shepherd, the technical director of St George, most of the design and materials selection is from the in-house design team; when combined with the design from Una Barac of Atellior, the two companies have created a fusion of colour that is exciting, young and dynamic“, said the judges about this three-bedroom home at London Dock.

SPACE International Hotel Design Magazine hosts a number of online discussions. With Editor Sophie Harper moderating these sessions, they find out more about the hot topics in the industry from some of their favourite designers. In this issue, you can find more about the importance of sensory design in the guest bathroom and the direct impact it has on wellbeing.

The panel met online to look through a presentation from Geberit on the Science Behind the Sensory Space before an open discussion took place to brainstorm ideas on what sensory design looked like in the guest bathroom...

Is good design less about how spaces look and more about how they make us feel?

“In the last year or two we have really started noticing that not only are we driving the agenda but that our clients are driving the agenda as well, which is really refreshing and exciting. We have three projects on our drawing board where either the client has brought it up or we’ve brought it to the table and the client has bought into it, and that’s to design with a biophilic approach. We’ve noticed that the luxury segment of the market is more perceptive to it as budgets are greater and you get to spend more time thinking about the experiential aspect of guest arrival and the use of the room, but what’s really important I think now is to bring that into the more limited service and budget market and make sure that biophilia and sensory design is something that we think of at all levels – because it should be for all of us and not just for a certain segment of the market. That’s an agenda I’m driving now – to try and bring elements of sensory design to all our projects if we can. Using biophilia does create a calming and restorative environment, in architecture it’s used in commercial spaces where it can help improve people’s productivity, which works in hotel meeting spaces, and for the leisure segment you want people to feel reenergised and renewed after their stay.” - Una Barac, Founder and Executive Director, Atellior

Kerzner International has launched a fitness and wellbeing brand called Siro, representing the pillars of Strength, Inclusive, Reflection and Original. Siro Boka Place, with 96 guest rooms and suites along with 145 residences, will launch in Porto Montenegro in late 2023.

Siro is being marketed as “an immersive lifestyle destination, blending the boundaries between hospitality, fitness, and wellness through a fresh perspective and energizing experiences. Siro will create a collective global community of like-minded individuals who live a high-performance lifestyle passionate about driving achievement and living their fullest potential.”

Kerzner International CEO Philippe Zuber told HOTELS, “We’ve observed that wellbeing is increasingly becoming a key driver in decision making for travel, as well as becoming an integral part of today’s lifestyle and consumer needs. There is no doubt that the pandemic has had an extraordinary impact on our industry, and the events of 2020 have, for many of us, highlighted the importance of health and balance in life… This market will continue to grow in the coming years as travelers increasingly hold their health in greater value and we saw an opportunity to surpass the current offerings with a new hospitality experience targeting holistic wellbeing.”

Zuber added that Kerzner’s long-term strategy is to grow the brand with hotels in key global cities, as well as destinations where it can develop an exceptional outdoor fitness offering with access to cycling trails, hikes, watersports, skiing, climbing or canyoning. “We are looking at major cities around the world that we feel would be a good home to Siro, from Miami to Dubai,” he said. “Siro could also work extremely well in a conversion of an existing asset, which makes it very attractive. We would like to sign 10 Siro hotels by 2025.”

The Siro experience will offer a variety of performance fitness activities reflective of each destination, such as cycling, sailing, hiking, boxing, climbing, kite surfing and skiing. Siro Boka Place will offer guests a number of sailing circuits, as well as a variety of cycling routes of varying length and altitude for all fitness levels. In addition, Siro will offer streaming classes, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events to further connect the brand’s community.

Following its glamorous renovation in 2016, 11 Cadogan Gardens will unveil the latest phase in its history this April. The Apartments by 11 Cadogan Gardens offer six one-, two- and three-bedroom sanctuaries, just a stone’s throw from the main hotel. The accommodation bears all the hallmarks of Atellior’s far-reaching experience, illustrating the studio’s flair for timeless elegance. Luxuriantly thick bedroom carpets, pale timber flooring by Havwoods in the living areas, marble-topped tables and oversized Circus 25 bed headboards combine to create a welcoming, residential feel.

Choice furniture pieces from Liang & Eimil, Swoon Editions and The Contract Chair Company add to the refined, contemporary scheme, alongside a striking selection of luminaires from LSA International, Northern Lights and Chelsom. The colour palette is intentionally muted, bringing together pale greens, warm greys and white. The bathrooms have been clad in white and grey tiles from Caesar Ceramics, while the kitchens feature white composite stone tops. These neutral tones provide the perfect backdrop for a collection of modern abstract artwork, introducing vibrant pops of blue and green, plus the moody guest cloakrooms with their Calacatta Viola splashbacks and darkly painted walls.

From the inclusion of earthy, natural tones to exquisite textured leaf motifs on the bedroom wallcoverings, to references to the gardens outside and the Royal Borough’s longstanding horticultural association, a tasteful combination is key to Atellior’s scheme. Providing the serenity and exclusivity of a home, with all the benefits of a luxury hotel stay, The Apartments by 11 Cadogan Gardens is set to be the perfect complement to the hotel’s offering.

An interview with our Directors about Le Meridien Lav's renovation featured in Journal

An interview with our Executive Director, Una Barac and Managing Director, Ante Marić about the design process for Le Meridien Lav's renovation.

View article online

The new interior design of the renowned hotel Le Meridien Lav Split

The thorough makeover of the hotel was entrusted to Atellior, an international architectural and interior design studio office with offices in Zagreb and London. The new design creates a modern, airy feel, yet pays homage to the cultural heritage of the hotel and its importance as a local landmark. We had a Q&A with Atellior directors Una Barac-Tinegate and Ante Marić about the luxury redevelopment of Le Meridien.

Atellior has been entrusted with an extensive renovation of the cult Le Meridien Lava, a hotel that has a long history and is an important part of Split's identity. How demanding was such a process?

Renovating a renowned hotel like Le Meridien Lava is challenging, of course, but it’s also a dream project for any designer. A hotel with such a heritage provides a historical narrative that we as designers can then translate into unique interiors through carefully chosen furnishings, finishes, and artworks.

What was the basic guiding thought in renovating the hotel?

The concept of the interior redesign was to achieve a balance between the hotel’s mediterranean ambience with the mid-century style of the brand itself. Le Meridien Lav has long been a well loved local resort and consequently we wanted to design a space that respects its past but, draws on its unique location to successfully create an ambience that future guests will enjoy.

For the residents of Split and Podstrana, Le Meridien Lav is a place that is undoubtedly woven into the collective memory. How did you integrate the social value of the hotel into the interior design?

A key element of the interior design were the carefully selected mid-century black-and-white photographs by Feđa Klarić and Stanko Karaman which document everyday life in Split. Thus we were able to incorporate Split's joie de vivre into the integral design concept of the Lav hotel.

The first phase of the renovation includes the renovation and conversion of accommodation facilities, but also the renovation of public spaces in the hotel. What was your biggest challenge in the remodeling process?

The public areas of the hotel provide fantastic views of the islands and coast and its existing layout already provided a good foundation. Our role was to maximise the use of space to cater for guests and staff while designing an interior that takes full advantage the unique setting of the hotel and the views from the lobby and Champagne Bar.

We believe that many are interested in hotel rooms, at least when it comes to visitors. What kind of interior redesign did you give to the rooms and where did the inspiration come from?

Our brief was to design guest rooms in keeping with both the requirements of leisure and business travellers. We have achieved this by creating rooms which provide an ambience blending formality and relaxation, using a colour scheme of beige and blue, with rattan and champagne-toned metallic accents.

Apart from aesthetics, what other hotel functions did you have to satisfy?

Every renovation should achieve a better and more functional design to anticipate the future needs of guests and the hotel industry. Through our many years of experience in the hospitality sector, we have learned to recognize and successfully implement new trends. Our design is sustainable, meets the expectations of investors and provides the guests with a new experience.

Large projects usually come with a series of instructions from the client. How much freedom did you have in the renovation?

It is important to note that the reconstruction had to meet the requirements of Marriott International as they have very clearly defined brand guidelines. Balancing brand guidelines together with the client's brief is always challenging, but we know from experience how to successfully manage expectations and to deliver an exceptional end product.

Two more phases of hotel renovation are forthcoming. What's in the plan? What awaits you in the next stages?

The next phase of refurbishment includes two more accommodation blocks in the hotel. We will also finalise the interior concept of the guest rooms within this new block.
